SDF discovers tunnel dug by the Islamic State in Raqqa

The SDF discovered a tunnel dug by the Islamic State in the east of Raqqa.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) discovered a tunnel dug by the Islamic State in the east of Raqqa. The tunnel had a depth of five meters and was about fifty meters long. It was located in the al-Meshlab district, a spokesman for the SDF said on Tuesday. The tunnel was blown up in a controlled explosion.

The discovery of the tunnel was made during the Retaliation for Raqqa Martyrs operation

which is aimed at ISIS cell structures. The SDF assume that the tunnel was created during the ISIS occupation.

Raqqa was occupied by IS in the summer of 2013 and declared the "capital" of the self-proclaimed "Caliphate". There, as in many other regions of Syria and Iraq, the terrorists built complex tunnel systems in which they could move safely. The tunnels also served as storage facilities for weapons and ammunition. Some went as far as Turkey.
