The Human Rights Association (IHD) Prisons Commission held a press conference at the IHD Headquarters regarding the deaths in prisons. IHD chair Eren Keskin attended the press conference.
Nuray Çevirmen, the co-spokesperson of the IHD Prisons Commission, said that there are 349,893 detainees in 399 open and closed prisons in the country. She added that 13 detainees, 2 of them women, have lost their lives since the beginning of 2023. According to the co-spokesperson, 4 detainees lost their lives due to illness and 4 others were killed by a firearm. The death of 6 of the prisoners is considered suspicious.
Çevirmen pointed out that as a result of the riot that broke out in Hatay T Type Closed Prison after the earthquake on 6 February, 12 detainees were injured and taken to hospital, while 3 of them lost their lives.
Çevirmen also drew attention to the family's statement about the suspicious death of 26-year-old Duygu Koral, who was imprisoned in Kandıra No. 1 F Type Closed jail.
Providing information about Yılmaz Ekinci, who died under suspicious circumstances in Aydın E Type Prison, the IHD executive said: "A case could be filed as a result of the appearance of footage showing Ekinci being tortured by the guards. In the case that was heard on 28 March 2023, the court rejected all requests to hear witnesses.
