At least one miner was trapped underground as result of a landslide at a coal mine in the Cudi mountains in Şırnak.
A landslide has occurred at a coal mine in the Cudi mountains in the Northern Kurdistan province of Şırnak on Tuesday. According to local sources, at least a worker has been trapped underground.
The coal mine is located near the village of Nêvava (Turkish: Üçkiraz). It is not clear how many workers were underground in the mine at the time of the accident. According to official sources, there were two workers, one of whom managed to escape. What led to the collapse of the coal mine is still unclear.
In Turkey, which like China, Russia and the Ukraine belongs to the so-called mining nations, accidents in the mining industry occur time and again. In May 2014, 301 miners died in the western Turkish town of Soma in the worst mining accident in the country's history, and 486 others survived.
