4 Swiss citizens unable to leave Turkey

Switzerland’s Foreign Ministry announced that the Turkish state arrested one Swiss citizen and issued travel bans for 3 others.

Prominent Swiss newspaper Tages Anzeiger wrote recently that some persons who hold dual Turkish-Swiss citizenships are still under arrest in Turkey and some have had travel bans issued against them. The Swiss Foreign Ministry issued a statement on the matter and confirmed Tages Anzeiger’s report.

4 PEOPLE (1 ON REMAND) CAN’T GO BACK TO SWITZERLAND

The statement the Ministry issued said one person who has dual citizenship is on remand in Turkey, and 3 others have been issued travel bans and can’t leave Turkey.

The Ministry said there were 8 persons in this condition in June, and 4 of them were able to return to Switzerland after several meetings.

The Ministry said the Turkish state did not give them information on why these persons were arrested or prevented from returning to Switzerland. Their efforts continue.

SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS USED AS AN EXCUSE

Most of the cases against the Swiss citizens who have been arrested or issued travel bans in Turkey are based on social media posts.

Several Swiss newspapers had published articles that the Turkish Embassy in Bern and Turkish consulates were used for espionage activity, and pointed out that there were many individuals in Switzerland who were working directly for the Turkish intelligence agency MİT. These MİT workers profile Erdogan’s opponents in Switzerland and relay the information to the Turkish state.
