It has been reported that at least 400 thousand students in South Kurdistan have been unable to start the school year as many of the people fleeing from the attacks of ISIS have been housed in school buildings.
In South Kurdistan, where hundreds of thousands took refugee following first the occupation of Mosul at the beginning of June and then Sinjar at the beginning of August by ISIS, education has also been affected by the savagery of ISIS. Many of these refugees are being accommodated in school buildings in the region.
The school year has started today in South Kurdistan. The Kurdish Education Minister, Pestevan Sadik, at a ceremony for the starting of the school year in a school in a neighbourhood of Hewler (Erbil), said at least 400 thousand students couldn’t go to school today. Sadik said they will solve the problem within two months.
The minister said they will open the schools when they provide new accommodation to the refugees, adding that the children of the refugees will also attend school.
According to Save the Children, an NGO, at least 650 schools have been unable to start the school year in the region of Duhok.
