46 detained in anti-government protest in Istanbul
Istanbul police took dozens of people into custody after staging a crackdown on demonstrators who marched to AKP's Kadıköy office and demanded the government's resignation in line with the bribery and fraud investigation on Wednesday evening.
Rubber bullets and intense tear gas was used against protestors who laid barricades and built fires in response to the police attack. Clashes spread to the area in a short time and lasted till late midnight, mainly on Bahariye Avenue.
Many of those detained were released after id check, while 46 among them, those arrested in Bahariye, are still being held in custody.
According to the most recent statement by Kadıköy Forums, 5 of the detainees are being held at Juvenile Department of Kadıköy police directorate, 6 at Göztepe police station and 35 at Kadıköy Rıhtım police station.
One of those at juvenile department is reported to be with a broken arm and denied transfer to hospital, while a 26 year-old woman is also denied permission to go to hospital despite suffering vagina bleeding.
Among those detained are also two Erasmus students, Lisa Fuchs and Gabriele Covi.
Thousands of people also took to the streets in Ankara, Kocaeli, İzmir, Mersin and Eskişehir yesterday and called on the government to resign amid the ongoing bribery and fraud scandal.
