A group of students at Bingöl University have started hunger strike in protest at the unjust implementations of the university administration, including investigations and disciplinary punishments against the students.
The indefinite and alternate hunger strike which was initiated by Bingöl University Students' Union (BÜÖ-DER) is now in its fourth day. The students are holding the strike at the office of Education workers union Eğitim Sen.
The head of Bingöl Bar Association Abdullah Alakuş and the members of the Bar's Executive Committee have a paid a visit to students today in support of their action against the unjust punishments issued by the university administration. Abdullah Alakuş said lawyers from the Bar are preparing to carry the discipline punishments of the university administration to the court.
Alakuş said these practices of the university administration constitute a violation of right to education, adding that the students had to start hunger strike as a last choice.
The head of the Eğitim Sen Bitlis branch, Metin Kılıç said they held three meetings with the university administration which however denied taking any responsibility about the issue. He also said the head of the security in the university, who is an ex-police officer was behind the incidents that create distress for students and that he even threatened the students.
The students on strike provided detailed information to the members of the bar about the policies of the university administration against the students, and reiterated their determination not to step back in their struggle against the unjust implementations of the university.
