The collective Eko-jin (ecological life), made up by several environmental organizations, has reached Batman. The group started a bike ride to draw attention to the destruction of the environment in Kurdistan.
The tour began in Dersim-Mazgirt. The aim of the tour is to reach Hewler/Erbil, the capital of the autonomous Kurdish region. For the duration of the tour, activists will document with images the destruction of the environment in Kurdistan.
Prior to their departure, participants said the slogan for their tour would be: "I protect nature - I cycle for a new life":
Speaking about Dersim they said: "The mountains of Dersim, full of perforations due to alleged possibility of extraction of raw materials, called us. The blocked rivers, forests burned and deforested called us. We have responded to these calls and decided to build a bridge between all those who share a commitment to the protection of nature".
The statement added: "We belong to those who can not accept that about a quarter of the energy needs of the entire country should be produced here in Dersim and that the price we would have to pay is to destroy this paradisiacal nature. We can not close our eyes to the fact that for the extraction of resources from the subsoil over 1,500 varieties of plants, will be destroyed".
