Gün TV punished for broadcasting 'The Pianist' movie

Gün (Day) TV, a local TV station broadcasting in Amed, has been punished by RTÜK (radio and television supreme council) for broadcasting 'The Pianist', which won awards at Cannes and the Oscars.

RTÜK has issued a caution to Özgür Gün TV for showing 'The Pianist', a film directed by Roman Polanski, which tells the story of a Jewish pianist who is sent to a concentration camp. RTÜK claimed the +18 symbol used at the start of the movie to warn viewers the film was not suitable for children was subsequently removed. The movie was shown on 14 August between 20.54 and 23:24.

The 4 members of RTÜK from the contingent of CHP (People’s Republican Party), MHP (Nationalist Action Party) and HDP (People’s Democracy Party) objected to the decision to caution the TV station, but were outvoted by the 5 members elected from the contingent of the AKP governing party.

A CHP member of RTÜK, Ali Öztunç, speaking to Hürriyet newspaper, said: "it is ridiculous that a film which has gained awards, and been watched by millions of people worldwide, and been broadcast in Turkey dozens of times, is being punished by RTÜK. The movie tells the story of one of the biggest genocides in the world. All the world media derided RTÜK when it punished the video clips of Rihanna and Shakira. Unfortunately, we will experience the same thing. This shows that  RTÜK lives in a different world and has a different agenda.”
