HDP rally in Istanbul in solidarity with hunger strikers

Today a rally is due to be held in Istanbul to demand of removal of Ocalan’s isolation, and to support the hunger strike campaign. People are moving towards the meeting location since early this morning.

The Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Istanbul branch has organized a meeting at Freedom Square in Bakırköy district in order to draw attention to the aggravated isolation of the Kurdish people’s leader, Abdullah Ocalan, and to support the hunger strike campaign led by Leyla Güven, co-chair of the DTK and deputy for the HDP, who is on indefinite hunger strike for 88 days.

The rally will be held under the motto “We meet for labor, peace and justice” and give the following message, “The darkness of isolation will be removed! The torch of freedom will be lit! Peoples will prevail through the resistance leading to revolution!”

The Incirli Street leading to the rally grounds is barricaded by the police. Anti-riot vehicles and armored vehicles have been deployed on all streets and mounted police are patrolling the area.

The people who are moving to the meeting location are subjected to searches at three separate police checkpoints.

A huge banner reading “Leyla Güven is right, isolation must end” was hung on the platform in the rally grounds.
