MEP Lambert: Öcalan should be released immediately

Green Group MEP, Jean Lambert, said that Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan, who had been unjustly jailed for nearly 20 years, should be released immediately.

Nilüfer Koç, the co-chair of the Kurdistan National Congress (KNK) and Ali Gül Özbek, representative of the Center for Kurdish Studies in London, held talks in the European Parliament on Tuesday.

Koç and Uzbek, met member of the European Parliament Greens Group, British Deputy Jean Lambert.

Koç informed Lambert on the latest political developments in Turkey, Syria, Iraq and review the situation taking place in Iran. Koi also invited Lambert to visit Rojava.

Ali Gül Özbek, on his part, drew attention to the local elections in Northern Kurdistan and Turkey, pointing out the attitude of the Turkish state and underlined the importance of the European Parliament to work against Turkey’s illegal and anti-democratic approach.

Lambert said that he had supported the Kurdish people's just cause and that he had visited Kurdistan many times in the past.

In particular, she underlined recent developments in Turkey and watched at them with concern. “Kurds and their leader Öcalan have been struggling for democracy, peace and freedom. In order to achieve them negotiations must be restarted on an equal basis. Öcalan has been wrongfully held captive for nearly 20 years, and should be released immediately.”

Speaking to the ANF cameras after the meeting, Lambert said Öcalan is indispensable for the settlement and development of democracy, peace and freedom.

Lambert added that the release of Öcalan would play a key role in the peace negotiations.
