Istanbul branches of Peoples' Democratic Congress (HDK), Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) and Party of Democratic Regions (DBP) and Istanbul Kurdish Institute have protested the sealing of the doors of the Dibistana Seretayî a Ferzad Kemangar-Ferzad Kemanger primary school opened in the Baglar district of Amed (Diyarbakır) to give education in Kurdish yesterday, the first day of the 2014-2015 school term.
Organising a joint action at the Galatasaray Square in Beyoglu, Istanbul, the HDK-HDP members as well as DBP executives in Istanbul and officials from Istanbul Kurdish Institute, stated that they say "no pasaran" to the policies of assimilation and denial imposed on the Kurdish language. Speaking at the protest demo, DBP Amed Deputy Nursel Aydogan said “If there is no opening for education in mother tongue, the Kurdish problem will remain unresolved”, warning the government about its policies.
The protest demo was also attended by many citizens, including a group of Circassians who joined the action with their own flags. The crowd frequently shouted slogans “Education in mother tongue cannot be prevented”, “Don’t remain silent, shout, mother tongue is right”, “Zimanê me rumeta me ye”.
The director of the Kurdish Institute, Sami Tan recalled in his statement that millions of children have for many years been forced to have education in a language they do not understand and in which they cannot express themselves because of the state’s monolingual policies. Tan said there are now Kurdish schools opened by civil initiatives in Amed, Cizre and Gever, which were however attacked by the intolerant state. Tan added that they will continue to struggle for education in mother tongue until the end, even if the state continues its attacks.
Speaking after, DBP Amed Deputy Nursel Aydogan condemned the shutting down of the Dibistana Seretayî a Ferzad Kemangar-Ferzad Kemanger primary school upon the order of Diyarbakır public prosecutor’s office and added that the state continued to pursue its racists policy of one language and one nation.
Drawing attention to the splendid struggle of the Kurdish people going on for 30 years, Aydogan stressed that the Kurdish people will not give up the struggle until they gain their right to education in mother tongue. Aydogan said the Kurdish problem will remain unresolved unless education in mother tongue is recognised as a right. Warning the government, Aydogan said: “Listen the Kurdish people and take their democratic demands seriously, otherwise the Kurdish people will initiate resistance in all the metropolitan cities in Turkey”.
