Police hinder funeral for YPG fighter in Erzurum

Police teams have attacked people in a convoy carrying the body of martyred YPG fighter Mahpus Güzeller in Hınıs district of Erzurum, arguing that the funeral will be used to “spread propaganda”.

Police teams have attacked people in a convoy carrying the body of martyred YPG fighter Mahpus Güzeller in Hınıs district of Erzurum, arguing that the funeral will be used to “spread propaganda”.

The body of YPG fighter Mahpus Güzeller (Şoreş Xınıs) who lost his life fighting ISIS in Serêkaniyê was brought to his hometown Hınıs after being handed over to his family and MEYA-DER executives at Şenyurt border gate in Kızıltepe district of Mardin. A long convoy accompanied the vehicle carrying his body.

On the way leading to Hınıs, police and soldiers blockaded the road with a number of armored vehicles. Saying that the Governor of Erzurum didn't allow the YPG fighter's body to be brought into the district on the grounds of “election propaganda”, police executives told the mass to take the body to Pınarköy village, where he wil lbe laid to rest, using another road.

As tension rose at the entrance of the town as the people insisted on performing the funeral prayer in the district, where all shops remain closed today, DBP and HDP executives went to the government office for a talk with the district governor on the matter.

As talks remained inconclusive, the mass wanted to march to to the town, upon which they were attacked by police wanted to march to to the town.

People responded to the police attack by chanting slogans and throwing stones. Conflict and tension in the district continues.
