Prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz who was kidnapped by DHKC (Revolutionary People's Liberation Front) militants earlier today has lost his life after sustaining a critical injury in the police operation against perpetrators at Istanbul’s Çağlayan Courthouse late today.
It is reported that Kiraz has lost his life at Florence Nightingale Hospital to which he was rushed after special operation police teams intervened the militants late in the evening, leading up to clashes in which two militants, Şafak Yayla and Bahtiyar Doğruyol, were killed and the prosecutor sustained injuries.
The prosecutor is reported to have been hit by 3 bullets in the head and 2 in other parts of his body.
The prosecutor was in the case of Berkin Elvan, a teenager who died after being hit on the head by a tear gas canister fired by police during Gezi protests in the summer of 2013.
The police operation came after the group warned that the prosecutor would be killed if their demands were not met; that the identities of police officers who killed Berkin Elvan be made public, that they confess their crimes during a live broadcast and be tried in people's courts. Militants also demanded that charges against those prosecuted for participating in protests condemning Elvan's death be dropped.
