The decision to shut down the refugee camp in Greek city Lavrion, where many Kurdish refugees live, has been protested against in a mass rally.
From June 31 onwards medical service and food aid has been stopped to the refugee camp in Lavrion, where approximately 300 refugees are sheltered. The refugees in the camp, most of whom are women and children, suffer from the lack of food and medical aid.
The Residents of the Lavrion refugee camp held a massive protest demonstration against the decision to shut down the camp that was was given following Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım’s visit in June.
A statement on behalf of demonstrators said that talks with the Refugee Ministry on this issue have produced no results, adding; “
"Unfortunately the Syriza government bowed to Erdogan's blackmailing. As refugees in Lavrion, we want an immediate solution to this problem and amendment for our victimization.”
Representatives of the Greek Communist Party (KKE), Workers Syndicate (OLME), Solidarity With Refugees Confederation and Greek activists also attended the demonstration.
Another protest march against the decision to close the camp is planned for September 29 at the Syntagma Square in Athens.
