Teachers demo attacked by police

Police attacked the demonstration organized in Ankara by Eğitim Sen, the teachers union on Saturday. A woman teacher sustained cerebral trauma when a gas canister fired by the police into the crowd hit her in the head. She was rushed to hospital where her conditions are said to be stable: the injury, said doctors, was sever but not life-threatening. A total of seven teachers were injured.

The protest was organized by the union against the government’s policies on education on the occasion of Teachers’ Day. Slogans against the privatization of education were the most chanted.

Teachers came to Ankara from all over Turkey, and met at Tandoğan Square but the police did not allow the crowd to pursue their march past Kızılay Square, and begun throwing tear gas canisers and water cannons.

Police chased the protesters in side streets surrounding Kızılay Square. Two people were detained, according to Hürriyet.
