Tension has risen once again in Gever, Hakkari's Yüksekova district after 25 years old Bemal Tokçu has died on Wednesday, having stayed in intensive care unit since last Saturday when he was severely wounded by a bullet that hit him on the head during the crackdown police staged on people.
Police brutally attacked thousands who were joining the funeral of Reşit İşbilir (35) and Veysel İşbilir (34) who were shot dead by Turkish police during a demo in the district on 6 December.
Dozens of armored vehicles and special operation teams with heavy weapons have been deployed in many areas in the district which has been surrounded by police forces today. Snipers have been positioned on high rise buildings.
Students of Yüksekova high school started a march to the “democratic resistance tent against murder of civilians” in Kışla neighborhood, chanting the slogan “PKK is the people and the people are here”.
Intense security measures have also been taken by soldiers at Harunan military guard post who are performing id control on every car passing by the area.
Special operation teams are reported to be patrolling in the Şemdinli district as well.
Executives of the BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) and Tokçu's family have taken their way to Van for the delivery of the young man's body to his hometown. Tokçu will reportedly be laid to rest tomorrow.
