War caused 19 billion euro loss, say Syrian PM
Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi said on Thursday that “terrorist actions in public and private sectors” have caused a financial loss of 2 trillion 900 billion Syrian lira (some 19 billion euro) in the last 30 months of conflict in the country.
Quoting the Prime Minister who spoke during a meeting in the parliament, Syrian Arab News Agency (Sana) said that the state would ask to borrow money from “friendly countries” in the scope of a re-construction plan.
The Prime Minister stated that the decline in production in energy sector in particular has caused a remarkable decrease in foreign exchange reserves. The Syrian country which primarily lives on petroleum production had an energy reserve valuing 18 billion dollars before the beginning of the conflict in the country in March 2011.
International sanctions and the ongoing controlling of most of the oil wells by armed groups has led to a decrease by 90 percent in petroleum production in Syria for the past 30 months.
According to the PM, the petroleum refinery in Humus, the third largest city torn by the war, is still active by ten percent, and the one in the Banja city controlled by the regime operative by 80 percent. The mentioned percentage is said to be meeting the internal energy need of the country.
