Wise People: PM forgot to put democracy in the package
Zübeyde Teker, president of the Associations of Help for Prisoners' Families Federation (TUHAD-FED), and Celalettin Tan from the Wise People Commission issued a press conference in response to the so-called “democratization package” Turkish Prime Minister announced on 30 September.
Speaking here, Celalettin Tan reminded that the government has yet to fulfill its promise to prepare one report out of the Wise People Commission's reports on seven regions and to announce it to the public.
Tan remarked that the Commission has felt the need to release its reports after seeing that the so-called "democratization package" met none of the proposals, demands and opinions highlighted by the public to the Wise People.
Commenting on the context of the package announced by the PM on Monday, Tan said; "We have concluded that the package is not adequate to meet the public demands, to contribute to the solution of the Kurdish issue and to bring democracy to Turkey. The context of the package has nothing to do with the work and reports of the wise people and it seems the government has read our reports and made use of several points we highlighted.”
Tan pointed out that "The Prime Minister has forgotten to put democracy into the package".
Speaking after, Zübeyde Teker noted that the package made no mention of the identities and demands of Kurds, Alevis, socialists and women.
Teker remarked that nor did the package present any proposals concerning the situation of political prisoners and thousands of guerrillas and soldiers. Pointing out that one single package will not grant identity and cultural rights, Teker said the package didn't meet even one percent of the demands highlighted in the reports of wise people. "If so, then why did we go and talk to the people?", she asked.
Teker, underlining that the package cannot answer the demands of the resolution process, called on the government to bring the demands of the people to the agenda.
