AANES hands over an ISIS woman and two children to Barbados

The Autonomous Administration of Northern and Eastern Syria has handed over an ISIS woman and two children to their state of origin, Barbados. There are thousands of foreign children in the camps in the autonomous region who are indoctrinated by ISIS.

According to the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), a female ISIS member and two children have been handed over to the Caribbean island nation of Barbados. A delegation led by embassy representative Andre Padmore visited the AANES Office of Foreign Relations for the official handover in the north-eastern Syrian autonomous region on 9 January.

The delegation was received by Fener El-Giêt (Fanar al-Kaeet) and representatives of the YPJ (Women’s Defense Units) and the Women's Committee. Padmore thanked AANES for the successful fight against ISIS and their cooperation regarding the repatriation of Barbadian nationals.

On Tuesday, AANES had announced the handover of 13 children and two ISIS women to Spain. According to the aid organisation Save the Children, there are still 7,000 children from ISIS families in camps in north-eastern Syria. Matt Sugrue, head of Save the Children's programme work in Syria, is calling for the accelerated repatriation of all affected children to their countries of origin.

According to the organisation's statistics, 517 children and women were repatriated from Hol and Roj camps by twelve countries in 2022. This is an increase of about 60 per cent compared to 2021 and of about 84 per cent compared to 2020.

There are about 12,000 ISIS members detained in prisons in north-eastern Syria. Hol Camp houses 7,800 ISIS women and children from 54 other countries, in addition to Syrian and Iraqi nationals. A new generation of ISIS is growing up in the camp.
