A delegation from the Northern Syria Federation visited Egypt to discuss the latest developments in Syria.

The delegation was composed by TEV-DEM (Movement for a Democratic Society) executive board co-chairman, Aldar Xelil, Northern Syria executive board member Elizabet Goriye and Hisen Ezam for the Cizire Region executive council and went to Egypt.

Aldar Xelil spoke to ANHA about the meeting. Acknowledging the long and strong relationship between the Northern Syrian administration and Egypt, Xelil said: “We held this visit within the context of the relations we have with this country and also taking into account the fact that Egypt wants to maintain a role in the region”.

Xelil underlined that “the attitude of the Arab States Union towards the Turkish invasion of Afrin has been clear”. He added that “indeed the Arab States had a much clearer attitude towards the occupation than that of many other states in world. Arab states have clearly condemned the attacks of the Turkish state and have emphasized that the Turkish state has no right to occupy any piece of land in Syria”.

He remarked that Egypt has wanted to solve the Syrian war with peaceful means from the beginning of the conflict and that in this context there are some possible initiatives to carry out. “Egyptian officials have repeatedly met with Syrian opposition officials in Cairo. These negotiations sought to find a solution to the Syrian war. However, due to the attitude of the opposition, the war in the country continued to deepen”.

Speaking to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Xelil said that they had evaluated the war in Syria. “We talked about the role of Egypt and the solution of the Syrian war. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry stated that they are ready to do whatever is in their hands to contribute to the solution of the Syrian war”.

Referring to the Cairo-3 Congress, Xelil said: “Egyptian officials are ready to support the programs and projects to be prepared for the Cairo-3 Congress, should an agreement be reached”.

Aldar Xelil commented on the next process. “We can cooperate with the Egyptian authorities if we sit down with other opposition forces and create a common plan. The important thing is that Egypt is ready to support".

Xelil clearly stated that “This Cairo congress is not to be seen as an alternative to Geneva and Astana talks, but rather as a continuation of those talks”.
