August 15 Initiative celebrated in Kobanê

Kobanê, town of martyrs, was also a scene of enthusiastic celebrations attended by large masses. 

Before the massive event of yesterday, Kobanê Rojava Youths Union (YCR) organised a festival in Bîr Reş village south of Kobanê city on Sunday as part of a series of initiatory celebrations. The festival was attended by dozens of villagers, YPJ and YPG fighters and civil society organisations.

The village school was adorned with huge banners reading "We will free our Leader Apo with the spirit of 15 August" and portraying pictures of legendary commander Mahsum Korkmaz (Egîd), freedom fighters and Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan, and also flags of Rojava Youth’s Union.

Following a military ceremony by the Rojava Youth’s Union, a speech was held on the occasion of the 15 August’s 33rd anniversary by member of Movement for a Democratic Society (TEV-DEM) Zergê Şêx Mihemed. The festival continued until the end with festive halay dances to revolutionary songs.

Yesterday on 15 August, Kobanê's people celebrated the holy day called Day of Resurrection throughout the whole day and into the night.

Joined by YPG/YPJ fighters and dozens of Asayish and traffic police members, hundreds of youths from Kobanê and surrounding villages gathered at the city's Free Woman Square with flags of Rojava Youths Union (YCR), YPG, YPJ, Kongreya Star and TEV-DEM, incessantly chanting slogans expressing loyalty to Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan, and condemning the attacks and policies of the fascist Turkish state.

The youths marched to hill Mishtenur where they lit a huge fire around which they danced in a circle and sang songs.

The celebration peaked yesterday in the center of Kobanê with a big event that continued into the night with highest enthusiasm and festive atmosphere, joined by all the people from all ages. The event was organised by the motto "We will free Leader Apo with the spirit of 15 August" at the square of 'Commander Mahsum Korkmaz' in Kobanê's center.

Hundreds of citizens participated the event from the beginning along with council members of the Democratic Autonomy Assembly and visitors from Girê Spî Canton and Sirîn region.

Following a minute of silence speeches were held by TEV-DEM Executive Committee member Ferhad Dêrik and Kongreya Star administrator Felek Yûsif congratulating all the peoples of the Middle East for the anniversary of the Day of Resurrection.

Following a video presentation on the history of the 15 August operation, the music group 'Rojava' from Girê Spî canton started to give a concert.

During the event, the Girê Spî Democratic Autonomous Administration presented a commemorative plaque to Kobanê's administration on the occasion of the 15 August celebration.

The event continued with Arabic songs by musicians from Manbij and Sirîn, and theatre performances by Martyr Yekta Theater Group.

The event continued into the night with halay dances.
