Yazidi women in Shengal celebrate International Women's Day

Yazidi women celebrated March 8 in the Kersê valley on Mount Shengal. The international community was urged to recognize August 3 as "Femicide and Genocide Remembrance Day."

March 8 is an international feminist day of struggle. In order to draw attention to the inequality that still exists between the sexes worldwide, women also came together today in the Yazidi settlement area of Shengal (Sinjar) to celebrate this day. Initiated by the umbrella organization of the Yazidi women's liberation movement TAJÊ, a demonstration took place in the mountains leading to the Valley Kersê. A stage had been set up there beforehand and decorated with the flags of the Autonomous Shengal Council, the YBŞ and YJŞ defense units, and a banner bearing the image of Abdullah Öcalan.

The March 8 celebrations began with a minute of silence for the victims of the massacres of the Yazidi people and their martyrs. The central slogan that was repeatedly shouted during the following program was "Jin, Jiyan, Azadî" [Woman, Life, Freedom]. Speeches and messages from various Yazidi organizations saluted the resistance of women worldwide and especially in Shengal against patriarchy and thus for life and for freedom. "Many brave women" such as Clara Zetkin and Rosa Luxemburg, who dedicated their lives to women's liberation, were remembered.

The demand for recognition of August 3 - the beginning of the 74th genocide against the Yazidi community in Southern Kurdistan by the ISIS - as an international "Femicide and Genocide Remembrance Day" was also emphasized several times. The cultural program was provided by music and theater groups such as Hêviyên Jinên Şengalê, Koma Şano and Koma Govendê. The event ended with extensive dancing.
