British geographer, political economist, social theoretician and activist Professor David Harvey met his readers at the Amed Book Festival yesterday. Professor Harvey spoke at the book fair at the Sümerpark Reception Hall regarding his latest book, “Seventeen Contradictions and the End of Capitalism (2014).

Prof. Harvey said his book focused on the fundamental contradictions of the capitalist system, which is said to be invincible, and yet is in constant crisis. He said that in recent times urbanisation has not been carried out for the benefit of the residents of cities, but as investment, adding that he has observed this in the US and China and also in Turkey.

Harvey said: “Instead of creating housing for those with low incomes, offices are built for the purpose of investment and then remain empty. If this continues, in fifty years’ time the world will turn into a pile of concrete.”

Harvey said this was an irrational situation. “Those on the right or in the centre think I’m mad, but in fact I’m the sane one. I’m making an appeal for people to join the Being Sensible Party.” Prof. Harvey said he had analysed 17 contradictions in depth in his latest book, and explained how we could become anti-capitalist.
