Iraq’s Ministry of Culture summited “Son of Babylon” a Kurdish movie to the Academy for this years Oscars.
The film tells the story of a 12 year old Kurdish boy and his grandmother in Northern Iraq in 2003, two weeks after the fall of Saddam Hussein. Hearing that some prisoners of war have recently been found alive in the wouth, they go in search of her son, the boy’s father who was forcibly conscripted 11 years before.
Iraqi filmmaker Mohamed Al-Daradji’s film is the first nominee for Oscars after decades of embargo.
Mohamed Al-Daradji, is co-founder of multi-award-winning Human Film & Iraq Al-Rafidain.
The film was supported by and showcased at the Middle East International Film Festival in Abu Dhabi, where it had its world premiere in October, and went on to Berlinale’s Panorama and Sundance, where it bowed internationally in the world cinema competition.
