Mother tongue class opened in Dersim

A class for teaching Kurdish language has been opened at the Youth Cultural Centre of the Dersim Municipality.

A class for teaching Kurdish language has been opened at the Youth Cultural Centre of the Dersim Municipality.

The staff of the Youth Cultural Centre has drawn attention to the importance of education in mother tongue and said: “We face the threat of the disappearance of our culture, history and faith through the disappearance of our language. This is why we have opened a class on the mother tongue on 21 February, International Mother Tongue Day.”

The class is to teach the Kırmancki dialect of Kurdish, which is widely used in the Dersim area. The executives of the Youth Centre said that the work of children and women’s choirs in Kırmancki continues at the Centre. The Children’s choir Omedya Mestu has recently released an album in which they sing in Kırmancki, Turkish, Kurmanci, Armenian and English.

In the meantime the mother tongue class at the Dilek Serin Educational Support Centre has started its second semester. The premier of the movie in Kırmancki, Wilika Kowu, will also be held today at 18:00 in the Conference Hall of the Culture and Tourism department of the municipality
