Med Nuçe and Newroz TV demand compensation from Eutelsat

Lawyers of MedNuçe and Newroz TV channels applied to the Paris Commercial Court on January 12 and demanded a compensation of 10 thousand euros for each day each channel is shut down.

Lawyers of MedNuçe and Newroz TV channels applied to the Paris Commercial Court on January 12 and demanded a compensation of 10 thousand euros for each day each channel is shut down. The court is expected to issue a decision on the matter on January 24.

In the defense it made, Eutelsat repeated its argument and demanded that the two Kurdish channels make direct deals with the satellite company. However, MedNuçe and Newroz TV do not trust Eutelsat and refuse to make such deals despite the court decision.

Both channels had requested that deals be made with the Italian IKO company through the BSS company in Brussels. Eutelsat’s push for a direct deal is seen as an attempt to buy some time. Eutelsat had sent an email to HotBird and requested the closure of the two TV channels on September 29, and the broadcast of MedNuçe was suspended on November 3. More than 20 TV channels and radio stations were shut down in Turkey on September 29, and Newroz TV’s broadcast was suspended on October 11.

The first trial of the court cast that began after Newroz TV and MedNuçe applied to the Paris Commercial Court was held on October 26. The court came to a decision on MedNuçe on November 15 and Newroz TV on November 17, decided against Eutelsat and demanded the reopening of the TV channels.

After the court decision, Eutelsat was supposed to resume the broadcast of MedNuçe or pay the compensation fee of 10 thousand euros for each day the TV channel’s broadcast was stopped. However, Eutelsat neither resumed the broadcast nor paid the compensation fee.
