Authorities of Akhisar T Type Prison impose search for prisoners to be sent to hospital

The authorities of Akhisar T Type Prison impose a thorough search for prisoners to be sent to the hospital. Those who do not accept the search are not taken to the hospital.

Bozo Açlan is in Akhisar T-Type Prison. He called his niece Meral Açlan about a month ago and told her that a thorough search was imposed for the prisoners to be sent to the hospital. He said that the situation of the prisoners is getting worse every passing day.

Mehmet Sevinç, a prisoner of 28 years, who suffered a cerebral haemorrhage in the same prison on 3 April 2022, died in hospital 4 days later. While there were contradictory statements by the prison administration and the hospital about his death, it was not clear what caused prisoner Sevinç to suffer a cerebral haemorrhage.

No hospital for those refusing to be searched

Meral Açlan described the conversation she had with her uncle and said: “Prisoners who do not accept the search are denied treatment. Ill prisoners are getting worse and worse because they do not receive the necessary treatment. The prisoners, who were not taken to the hospital because they refused to open their mouths during the searches, are suffering from heart disease, borderline osteoporosis, epilepsy, Parkinson's, diabetes, high blood pressure, vertigo, stomach and intestinal diseases and have been left without treatment for about a month. My uncle is not ill, but he wanted the voices of his friends to be heard and treatment to be given as soon as possible.”

Açlan said that Mehmet Sevinç passed away in the same prison a short time ago. Stating that there are still unanswered questions regarding Sevinç's death, Açlan said: "He was brought to the hospital the day before. There were contradictions in the statements given the day after he died. Treatments need to be given so that the same situation does not happen again. The diseases mentioned are serious and dangerous if they are not treated. Prisoners can't take their medicine either. They are only taken to the infirmary inside the prison. There, too, proper maintenance is not done because the opportunities are very limited. They need to be taken to the hospital for proper care."
