Children from Batman yesterday were on the streets for not selling tissues, polishing shoes or working in unsafe manners but for saying “stop to child labour”.
The city witnessed an unusual and yet very important march by some five hundred children attending courses at the Child Development Centre, created by the Social Services Provincial Directorate.
Walking with torn shoes, children shouted that they don’t want to be battened.
Nearly five hundred children were included in summer classes at Child Development Centre as a measure to prevent the unsafe working of children on the streets.
12 June is World Fight Day Against Child Labor and yesterday children took to the streets wearing t-shirts writing “Sensibility against Child Labor”. The march saw the participation of Deputy Governor Yasemin Çetinkaya, Provincial Social Services Director Ali Tarhan and Provincial Deputy Director of National Education Bahattin Atilla.
WE WANT TO GROW UP AT HOME, NOT IN THE STREETS
Chanting slogans “I am not old enough to get used, small enough to play games”, “Say stop to missing future”, “I am a child and have the right to play games.”, children also held a press conference. Reading the statement, Hüseyin Turan called out to adults saying: “Paying children for selling handkerchiefs and simit, polishing shoes is a way to show them that those are jobs you can get money from. And children often end up by leaving school to continue to work as they can’t give up getting money. Send children to schools rather than to work; try to speak with them rather than use violence against them, always believe and trust them as each child needs trust. A child wants to grow up in a nice and warm home rather than in the streets.”
