The number of suicide incidents is rising gradually in the Kurdish district. In the first quarter of 2010, according to the newspapers, 67 people committed suicide. 28 of them were women, 39 of them were men. Most of the men committed suicide because of psychological depression caused by the economic crisis. Women committed suicide, mostly because of their oppressive families.
Most of the suicide news is not even mentioned in the newspapers because they are so commonly ordinary events. This fact, alone, shows that, economic crisis and unemployment brings people to the edge of the psychological breakdown. In 2010, ANF, gathered the number of suicide news in the first three months, and the number proved the terrible reality of the region.
AKP (Justice and Development Party) claims that global economic crisis did not affect Turkey, as a result of their economic policies. The truth, however, is far from that. 17 of the 39 men who took their own lives did so because of the financial difficulties. Oppressive family traditions in the region, mostly, have lead to women committing suicide.
MORE MEN COMMIT SUICIDE THEN WOMEN
In the Kurdish region, 67 people killed themselves. To these we have to add the 41 attempts to commit suicide. Those attempts were not mentioned in the newspapers. Out of 41 people who try to commit suicide, 23 of them were women, 18 of them were men.
ECONOMIC CRISIS IS THE REASON
Main reason behind the men’ suicide is the economic crisis and unemployment. 17 of the 39 men killed themselves as a result of unemployment and unpaid debts. Young men who could not pay back the credit card instalments chose to take their lives.
A 41 years old teacher who was teaching mathematics in Anatolian teaching high school in Kahramanmaras, killed himself because of high credit card debt. He threw himself from the window of his apartment on the ninth floor. Kerim Azizoglu 32, father of 2, shot himself in his home. Mustafa Zeytun, 22, a university student hanged himself with an electric wire. He was the bread winner of the family and looking after his mother and young brother. Recently he was made redundant. Yusuf Kalner 20, who lived in Van, hanged himself. He would have started his compulsory military service in ten days time. A father of 2 who lived in Elazig, M.D. 39 shot himself as a result of long term unemployment. In Diyarbakir, a man who could not find a job for long time also killed himself.
In Cizre, Musa Virevan, 35 and father of 5 was found hanged in his home. He hanged himself because he could not pay back his debt of 5.000 TL. Fatih Y. unemployed, hanged himself on a tree in his garden.
SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS COMMIT SUICIDE
Another significant outcome of the ANF research is the number of suicide incidents committed by young people young people in the region. Lyceum students, Hekim Bozkurt of Hakkari, and Mehmet Sirin of Batman are just two of them. What triggered them to commit suicide is unknown. They were just teenagers.
18 years old Alpaslan S.,18 wanted to end a blood feud between two families. Since there was no attempt to end it, he shot himself on his stomach, but he was saved.
WOMEN COMMIT SUICIDE FOR "HONOUR"
In the region, 23 women attempted to committ suicide and failed but 28 of them killed themselves. The main reason for the women suicide attempt is the tribal traditions and oppressions forced upon them by their families.
Fatma Ucan, 20, was forced into an arranged marriage which she did not want. She shot herself with her father's handgun. In Cizre, 20 years old Gulbahar Karakoyun who was married to her uncle’s son a month ago, also killed herself.
