EMP writes about hunger strike

Marie-Christine Vergiat - Member of the European Parliament, Front de Gauche, has released a press release about the ongoing hunger strike in Turkey.

Vergiat stated that "Currently in a mission of the "ANECR" in the Kurdish part of Turkey, I have to denounce the lies that were told last week by M. Erdogan during his visits in several European States. How dare he say that there is no hunger strike going on in Kurdish jails considering that his own minister of justice was at the same time in Ankara expressing concerns for the life of several hunger strikers".

The European deputy said that "According to the minister and several other sources on the ground, there are currently 700 hunger strikers in Kurdish jails some of which are starting today their 55th day of strike, endangering their life more with every minute. This morning 10 000 political prisoners have launched a call for solidarity. It is urgent to intervene. The different European institutions, including the Council of Europe, and the governments of the Member States, cannot keep silent".

Pointing out that "Thousands of people are today imprisoned in Turkey for political reasons: politicians, journalists, trade unionists, human rights defenders, students, and even dozens of children under 16 years old, Kurdish or non-Kurdish" the euro deputy said that "most of them have only defended their positions, peacefully demonstrated or even simply done their jobs. And today the "trial of the lawyers" is starting".

The deputy ended her statement by saying that "It is not possible to remain silent. Do not let them die without saying anything".

In this context of extreme tension and violent government repression that the delegation will hold a press conference today, Tuesday, in the Turkish Parliament in Ankara.
