Human Rights Association (IHD) Istanbul Branch filed a criminal complaint for the trial of those responsible for the accident where five prisoners burnt to death in a ring vehicle last month.
Coming together in front of the Istanbul Court in Çaðlayan, IHD members presented the criminal complaint petition to Istanbul Chief Public Prosecution to be conveyed to Pýnarbaþý Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. The petition demanded that the Justice Minister, General Director of Prisons, administrators of Van M-type Prison, Muþ Prison and Metris Prison and the staff responsible in the car responsible for the transfer on charges of “causing death by negligence of a particular obligation and neglect of duty”.
The petition listed the omissions in the event and said that; “There is incontrovertibly a great irresponsibility, negligence and insensitivity in the event. The choice of the mentioned vehicle type is in itself irresponsibility for torturing prisoners and making them suffer pain and risking their lives. If the assertion of the vehicle staff is true that they weren’t able to unlock the doors during the fire, the responsibility will then belong to the authorities that approve the usage of this kind of vehicles.”
The petition remarked that the transfer of prisoners under torture and pain along the 649 kilometer way was another significant omission and noted that the vehicles hadn’t undergone the necessary controls before the transfer.
The petition also demanded the trial of Istanbul Metris Prison which owned the car and didn’t fulfill the necessary maintenance of the car which caused a fire due to a technical defect.
After presenting the criminal complaint, IHD members made a press release and remarked that “the complaint was made to warn relevant authorities and to remind them of their duties”.
