The alternate hunger strike started by inmates on January 17 continues in Edirne F Type Closed Prison, which is located at the remotest point of the Edirne province at the far end of Turkey. The prison houses hundreds of inmates held in severest conditions.

Prisoners joining the hunger strike demand the isolation of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan, dismissal of the prison manager Haydar Ali Ak who is responsible for inhumane treatment against inmates, transfer of HDP Co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş and HDP Hakkari MP Abdullah Zeydan -both of whom are held in the same prison- to the ward of political prisoners and the return of the all confiscated properties of prisoners.

Reports suggest that a guardian by the name of Cumali is constantly threatening the inmates on hunger strike which is being run by the third alternate group at the moment. Prison staff are raiding the wards and insulting the inmates under the name of “ordinary search” in an attempt to sabotage the hunger strike. Wards in the prison are raided twice a week and the books, notebooks and pens of the inmates are seized. Social activities of prisoners are banned for a long time for various reasons and only those approved by the prison administration are used to go out in the yard.

Already severe practices in the jail have gotten tougher since HDP Co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş and HDP Hakkari MP Abdullah Zeydan were brought to this prison. Held in one-person cells on grounds of "security", Demirtaş and Zeydan have nothing apart from a bed and blanket in their cells and the papers on which they write are confiscated. Both are held in the C Block where prisoners sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment are held.
