ISIG: 1843 workers lost their lives in 2022

The Occupational Health and Safety Council (ISIG) reported that at least 1843 workers lost their lives in occupational accidents in 2022.

The ISIG released its 2022 report on occupational accidents. The report emphasized that 30,546 workers died in occupational accidents during the AKP's rule.

The report said: "While MUSIAD (Independent Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association), TUSIAD (Turkish Industry and Business Association), TİSK (Turkish Confederation Employer Associations) and similar organizations have gained favour, wages have melted, union and the labour movement in general have been weakened, strikes have been banned and thousands of workers could not return home from their workplaces. At least 1843 workers died in occupational accidents in 2022 alone. This means that at least 5 people lost their lives per day."

The report continued: “When we realize that 5 percent of the workers who died in all occupational accidents are unionized, we can say that 'being a union member prevents deaths in workplaces'. However, when considering the example of Amasra city, it is necessary to add that "being a union member is not enough, one also has to be organized. Because worker organizations and worker control prevent occupational accidents that cause deaths. Being a member of a union and signing a collective agreement showed that this organization and control were not adopted in Amasra as in Soma."

While Istanbul has the highest number of occupational accidents with 256 worker deaths, Riha has the least number of deaths with 36 workers.
