Municipality to help women selling their products

In its continue work to help creating alternative jobs for women, Sur Municipality of Diyarbakir has been preparing a project of selling hand-made pickles by women to markets and grocers.

Sur Mayor Abdullah Demirbaþ, speaking to bianet about the municipality’s former and current projects for the employment of women, said that they aimed at creating an alternative economic power, so to say, to teach people how to catch a fish instead of giving them a fish.

"Gender equality can be achieved"

Demirbaþ pointed out that the rural-urban migration leads to an urbanization nonconformity in particularly unskilled labor force, adding that women, who constitute half of the society, have a primary importance in the emancipation of the social life.

Thinking that women’s self-confidence will also increase when they ensure economic freedom and become actors in the process of economic production, Demirbaþ is of the opinion that equality between men and women at home can be achieved in this way.

“Producing brings self-confidence with it"

Demirtaþ says that they have provided additional income to around 150 families through the village bread project, mushroom project, henna project, tomato paste and dried vegetables project and jewelery design projects developed in the city so far.

Assessing the experience so far, Demirbaþ says that the economic income women gain in this way return as self-confidence in family and society.

"The aim is for the plus value earning of women”

Demirbaþ noted that they are also trying to raise consciousness for a co-generation in the social respect and avoid the creation of a competitive mentality among the women involved in the projects.

Demirtaþ added that; “We are trying to enable these works to provide a social solidarity as well as a face to face communication. In this way, we both compensate the lack of communication created by modernity and expand the consciousness of solidarity and assistance. On this ground, we try to enable them to earn plus value by turning their production to earning.”
