Reaction from Batman Bar
Batman Bar Association reacted to the incident. While the lawyers participated in the statement made in front of the courthouse dressed in their robes, Bar Association President Erkan Şenses said: "We will use all our legal rights to ensure the police officer is punished. We demand that the relevant officer be detained and arrested. We do not even want to think about what he did to the suspects in custody, considering that he treated a lawyer in this way in the middle of the courthouse."
Providing information about the incident, Şenses said: "A suspect brought to the courthouse was trying to escape, but the police officer caught him and started to beat him in the middle of the courthouse. When our colleagues tried to prevent this, the police officer head-butted our colleague." Stating that there was camera footage of the incident and the statements of witnesses were clear, Şenses added: "Lawyer Orhan Alphan was wounded by a police officer on his head. We demand the Chief Prosecutor's Office to detain and arrest the officer."
Şenses said: "Turkey is a state of law. The requirement of a rule of law is that no one has the freedom to commit crimes. We requested the collection of evidence from Batman Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. I hope that the necessary action will be taken against the police officer. Attacking lawyers means attacking the freedom of society to seek justice and rights. We strongly condemn it."
Following the announcement, lawyers from the Batman Bar Association Board of Directors went to visit Alphan in the hospital.
