The Turkish police are trying to create a climate of fear in northern Kurdistan through repression, violence and arrests.
In recent days, the Turkish state repression against civil society, but also against the population in general, especially against children and young people, has increased in North Kurdistan.
The repression, however, is met by resistance from the population in northern Kurdistan.
In the latest incident, an armored vehicle of the Turkish police entered the Abdulkadirpaşa neighborhood in Nusaybin district of Mardin on Sunday and began to hunt passersby, especially children who played on the street.
The police claimed that a child had fired a firework rocket at a police station. The children fled into the houses and the parents locked the doors.
The police then tried to kick in the door of a family. When that failed, they threatened the people inside the house. After they opened the door, the police tried to arrest a 20-year-old woman from the family and dragged her into an armored vehicle with insults and threats.
The reaction was immediate, and the residents started to protest. They reported statements from the police, such as: "I will break your legs". The protest against the arrest grew as more and more people came to the scene. The police were eventually forced to release the woman.
The residents said: "We are neither safe in our homes nor on our streets. Our life is in danger."
