Rights violations are increasing in Erzurum Dumlu High Security Closed Prison No. 2. In a phone call with his father Samet Kaya on December 25th, prisoner Ramazan Kaya spoke about the rights violations they are subjected to.
Ramazan Kaya stated that the prison is turning into a torture center day by day and the most basic human needs such as water, food and electricity are being used as an instrument of torture against them.
“Yesterday we were not given water until noon. When we asked why, they laughed and insulted us. Some guards seem to be specially selected. They approach us like enemies. When raiding the wards, the guards attack and insult everyone. The prison director tries to provoke political prisoners and drive them to suicide. In addition, although we press the call button to ask for help to solve the water and electricity problems, the ringtone of the button is turned off and we are prevented from getting help. Sick prisoners are denied the right to treatment. Their condition is getting worse day by day. The prison administration is doing this deliberately.”
Kaya stated that after an imposition of solitary confinement and prevention of visitations, they are now fined and see their right to open air arbitrarily restricted.
He remarked that the prison administration kind of grants them the right to drink water, eat and watch TV whenever it wants.
Ramazan Kaya added, “I don't know what will happen to me after the phone call. The policies here are not independent of the policies in İmralı. We are not even allowed to breathe here. That is why we expect all civil society organizations and the public to be sensitive. We are not abandoned and we call for awareness by our people and the whole public.”
