Throwing stones still punished with heavy prison sentences

Prosecutor in Urfa asked heavy sentences for Kurdish children who participated in demonstrations and threw stones to the police.

Two 14 year-old children who participated in a demonstration were sued with 20 years imprisonment demand. The two children were brought to justice despite their report “They don’t understand the meaning of the crime” and said “We are not PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party) members.”

13 children between ages 14-17 were sued with 20 years imprisonment demand each because of their participation at a demonstration in Urfa organized by DTP (Democratic Society Party, which has been banned by the Constitutional Court- last December).

Special High Criminal Court asked for a report to establish whether two 14 year-old children Fidan K. and Ismail C. are aware of the crime or not.

The report stated that the two children don’t have the maturity to perceive the demonstration they participated in and the court therewith dismissed the cases of two children. Despite the report, the prosecutor again issued an accusation with 20 years imprisonment demand and sent it to court. Brought to justice for the first time, children stated their innocence, saying; “We wouldn’t have done if we had known that it was forbidden. We are not PKK members.”
