Two detainees die after torture by guards in Silivri prison

The Human Rights Association Istanbul Branch reported that two prisoners were tortured by prison guards before losing their lives in Silivri Prison.

The Human Rights Association (IHD) Istanbul Branch reported that a prisoner named Serhan Yılmaz and another prisoner whose name could not be identified were tortured by prison guards in Silivri Prison and passed away on Monday. IHD urged the Ministry of Justice to give information on the prisoners’ deaths.

“On April 6, prisoners in Silivri Prison were beaten, tortured and forced to commit suicide. False statements were made about them, and when they were taken to hospital, they were forced to declare that they had not been beaten. The General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Houses denied the allegations in a statement on 9 April after 8 prisoners were reported to have been taken to Silivri State Hospital,” IHD said in a press conference today.

“However, it came out that torture and ill-treatment still continue, prisoners are prevented from meeting with their lawyers, and a prisoner named Serhan Yılmaz and another prisoner whose name could not be identified died yesterday (April 11). Serhan Yılmaz's body was taken by his family.”
