Women demonstrated once more in different cities yesterday to protest against the rise in the number of rapes and violence against women.
The Women Movement for Democracy and Freedom (DKOH) lead the marches in Diyarbakir, Ankara, Van, Batman, Hakkari and Izmir to condemn abuses and rapes. In particular the women drew attention to the latest cases of violence in Mardin, Siirt, Van-Erciþ and - only last week - in Tunceli-Ovacik. Police in Izmir prevented the women to hold their march.
The protests meetings, marches and press conferences are all part of the campaign named “Rise the Fight for Freedom and Beat Rape” which which was launched last May. Several members and deputies from Peace and Democracy Party (BDP), Socialist Democracy Party (SDP), trade unions and many other representatives from NGOs took part in the demonstrations.
BDP Istanbul deputy Sabahat Tuncel condemned police in Izmir for not allowing women to march.
SDP deputy chair Yesim Ergun addressed women in front of the Human Rights Monument on Yuksel Street in Ankara.
Women in Diyarbakir from Amed City Women Assembly had organized a press conference. Sociologist and manager of Kardelen Women House Yilda Altýn has made a speech there.
