Police did not allow women to celebrate International Women's Day in Mersin on Saturday.

Several tanks and armored vehicles as well as hundreds of riot police officers blocked the square where the celebration was to take place. Despite Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Mersin co-chair Aynur Aþan’s efforts to negotiate with the police, the celebration was not allowed and women had to leave the square.
