2717 Yazidis still missing after the 2014 genocide in Shengal

Dindar Zêbari, a member of the Kurdistan Region Government's Organization for Responding International Reports, said that the fate of 2717 Yazidis is still uncertain and claimed that 6415 Yazidis have been rescued so far.

Dindar Zêbari, a member of the Kurdistan Region Government's Organization for Responding International Reports, made a statement to mark the 8th anniversary of the massacre carried out by ISIS against the Yazidi people on August 3, 2014. Zêbari said that 550 thousand Yazidis have been living in the Kurdistan Region since 2014 and there are more than 135 thousand Yazidi refugees. He added that more than 5 thousand Yazidis were killed, and 68 Yazidi religious sites were destroyed during the genocidal onslaught eight years ago. Also, he has visited 83 mass graves.

Zêbari revealed that more than 100 thousand Yazidis migrated abroad.

Zêbari claimed that the reason why Yazidis could not return was the misfortunes they experienced in their homeland, due to "restlessness". However, the Shengal Autonomous Administration has made several appeals for the Yazidis to return to their homeland and stated that it is a political decision of the KDP to pose obstacles to the Yazidis’ return to Shengal.

Zêbari also addressed the global recognition of the Yazidi massacre, saying, “Many committees were established for archiving the crimes of ISIS. These archives were submitted to the International Criminal Court in the Hague. We have been striving for a world-wide recognition of the Yazidi massacre for two years.”

Zêbari remarked that the fate of 2717 Yazidis is still uncertain and claimed that 6415 Yazidis have been rescued so far.
