54 lawyers in Iran face investigation over solidarity with the family of Jina Mahsa Amini

The Iranian judiciary launched an investigation against dozens of lawyers who expressed solidarity with the family of Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini, murdered in Tehran last September.

Since the murder of Jina Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish girl killed by the Iranian morality police on 16 September 2022, a national uprising known by the slogan "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" (Woman, Life, Freedom) continues throughout the country. Ten months on, although diminished in intensity, protests continue amid arrests, torture and executions of protesters.

After the brutal murder of Amini, 54 lawyers published a joint declaration, expressing solidarity with the family of the young Kurdish woman and denouncing the unlawful actions of the state forces.

According to reports, Bukan Chief Prosecutor’s Office summoned the lawyers who signed the declaration, accusing them of “publication against general principles”.

The notice sent by the prosecutor’s Office gave the lawyers 5 days to give their statements, noting that the lawyers in question would be referred to court 5 days after their testimony.
