A mountain voice: Guerrilla Jiyan Koçer

Guerrilla Jiyan Koçer, determined and sincere, stated that she joined the freedom ranks in 2014 and added: "I got to know the comradeship of the PKK, Kurdistan, the history of the world and the party. In short, I got to know myself on the mountains."

While I was going towards Birîndara in Shikefta, one of the highest mountains of the Zap that witnessed the great resistance, a voice made me turn towards a different path. Ahead, I saw two female guerrillas sipping ice-cold water at the fountain under the heat of noon. I greeted with great enthusiasm guerrilla Jiyan and Avesta. After a short chat, I learned that they were our second couriers.

When I asked "Which one of you were singing the song I just heard?", guerrilla Jiyan excited, betrayed herself before she even said it was her. Although the humble people of the mountain, who are not used to the camera, seem a bit shy at first, guerrilla Jiyan agrees to sing again the Kurdish folk song 'Yan mirin yan Diyarbekir' that she had just sang.

Guerrilla Jiyan Koçer, who answered my questions with her sincere stance and shy gaze, talked about the mountains in these terms: "I grew up in a family of breeders in Botan. I sometimes saw the guerrillas. I was very interested in their approach to each other, their conversations. They told us the stories of the Botan mountains. I was very curious about everything they did. I always wanted to be with them. I joined the ranks of freedom in 2014. I got to know the PKK comradeship, the history of Kurdistan, the history of the world, the history of the party. In short I got to know myself on the mountains.”

Guerrilla Koçer continued: “Life in the mountains is different every day. I was illiterate. My comrades in the mountains taught me to read and write. The more I read Rêber Apo's ideology, the more I liked life and struggle. When we were at home, we saw and heard what the fascist Turkish state was doing to the youth and the people, there would be soldiers in the villages. They would spread fear on everyone.

As I understood Rêber Apo's ideology and as a woman my devotion to the mountains grew stronger, I overcame all my fears. I am no longer afraid of anyone and anything. I saw my strength as a woman and I know what I am fighting for in the mountains. The guerrilla lives in the mountains with the simplest form of truth against all the pollution of the system. Mountain people live in the simplest and purest form of life."

Guerrilla Koçer has deeply influenced her comrades with hers determined and sincere stance in life and became a leading guerrilla commander. Known for her practicality, Jiyan had become a guerrilla who knew how to improve herself by taking the guerrilla-style training as a basis.
