Appeal to have the Cizre basements investigated refused

A relative of one of the missing people appealed to the Cizre Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office to have the basements in Cizre investigated, but their appeal was refused.

As more bodies are retrieved from the basements in Cizre, a family who couldn’t reach their children trapped in one of the basements during the curfew appealed to the Cizre Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, and were given a scandalous answer.

The Yıldız family appealed to have an investigation for their missing daughter Feride, but their appeal was refused because “the blood samples provided don’t match the bodies”.

Dozens of people were killed in basements where they took refuge from the clashes outside during the third curfew in Şırnak’s Cizre district.

When Feride Yıldız was last contacted, she was trapped in a basement in Bostancı Street. Her family appealed to the Cizre Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office to have the fate of their child investigated.

Mother Feleknaz Yıldız thought her daughter Feride Yıldız could have lost her life during the clashes, so she gave a blood sample to be compared with the DNA samples taken from the bodies sent to the Istanbul Forensic Medicine Institution.

Istanbul Forensic Medicine Institution wrote to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and stated that “According to the report, the plaintiff Feleknaz Yıldız’s DNA sample doesn’t match any of the DNA samples retrieved from bodies in Cizre.”

The family says their daughter’s name was on the list in the Cizre basements, and reported to the Cizre Chief Public Prosecutor’s office that their daughter was missing, demanding a search in the area of the basements.

“NO NEED TO PROSECUTE”

Cizre Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office did not find cause to prosecute on the family’s demand, and refused the appeal for an investigation by saying: “As the blood sample provided hasn’t matched with the samples in the Istanbul Forensic Medicine Institution, and there is no cause for prosecution due to the alleged crimes in the name of the public.”

A male body was discovered in the site of TOKİ constructions, which started after the Cizre basements were torn down.

On June 10, two bodies discovered in Yafes neighborhood near the basements were buried in the nameless cemetery as their identity couldn’t be confirmed. Construction workers had reported an intense smell from the basements during the demolition.

“TOKİ CONSTRUCTION SHOULD BE HALTED FOR AN INVESTIGATION”

The Yıldız family’s lawyer Gülşen Özbek is preparing for an appeal to have the DNA from the two bodies compared with the family.

Özbek stated that their appeal on Feride Yıldız wasn’t investigated properly and added: “Authorities refuse to dig to retrieve bodies, citing ‘security’ as an excuse, but TOKİ starts construction and bodies are discovered during their dig. The TOKİ construction in the area where the basements are should be halted as soon as possible and a detailed investigation should be carried out.”

The Cizre Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office didn’t carry out any inspections in the area of the basements after the curfew was lifted. The fate of 9 people who were known to be in the basements is still unkown.

Meanwhile, bodies continue to be discovered in other clash grounds in Nusaybin, Sur and Cizre.
