Aysel Doğan commemorated in Maxmur

Aysel Doğan has been commemorated in Maxmur. The Kurdish politician, who died in Cologne, spent some time in the refugee camp in southern Kurdistan and was personally known to the residents.

A memorial service for the Kurdish politician Aysel Doğan, who died in Cologne, took place in the Maxmur refugee camp in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq). Hundreds of people took part in the event at the Association of Martyrs’ Families. A minute of silence was held at the beginning, after which a statement by the Party of Free Women of Kurdistan (Partiya Azadiya Jinê ya Kurdistanê, PAJK) was read in which Aysel Doğan's commitment to women's liberation was honored.

Sultan Yildiztan, the co-chair of the association, gave a speech in which she commemorated Aysel Doğan and all those who died in the Kurdish liberation movement in the month of May, stating, "Comrade Aysel directly experienced the effects of the Dersim massacre and the reality of the Turkish state. She fought until the last moment of her life and fell. As the people of Maxmur, we mourn her. We all knew comrade Aysel very well and we know how she resisted occupation and betrayal. When the enemy attacked the graves of martyrs, she said ‘the enemy is even afraid of our bones.’ And yes, that is true, the enemy fears the bones of our martyrs, and we saw that one more time at comrade Aysel's funeral. Comrade Aysel was here in the camp for a while and went on hunger strike with us. We are full of gratitude for what the martyrs have done. At this point, we promise one more time that we will continue their struggle and make their dreams come true."

A mourning tent has been erected at Maxmur Camp, which is visited by residents in memory of Aysel Doğan.
