DBP co-chair Bayındır sent to prison

The Kurdish politician Keskin Bayındır has been arrested in Amed. The DBP co-chair is accused of being a member of an "armed" organization. His party describes the process as a "result of desperation" on the part of the regime.

Pre-trial detention has been ordered against the co-chair of the Democratic Regions Party (DBP), Keskin Bayındır. This was decided by a court in Amed (tr. Diyarbakır) after Bayındır had been questioned for several hours until midnight on Monday. The Kurdish politician faces a prison sentence of up to 15 years on charges of terrorism.

The Turkish judiciary accuses Bayındır of "membership in an armed terrorist organization". In addition to Bayındır, the co-chair of the DBP Amed provincial association, Hayrettin Altun, was also arrested. Thirteen other political figures at the regional level, who were taken into custody in different cities at the same time as the two politicians last Friday, were released with the obligation to report to the police.

Investigation files kept secret

What the DBP co-chair, who was born in Sason in 1984, is specifically accused of is not known due to a confidential order on the file. The lawyers explained that the interrogations almost exclusively focused on the principles and goals of the party- “For what purpose and by whom was the DBP founded? When did your relationship with the party begin? Who wrote the statute? What role did Abdullah Öcalan play in the founding phase of the party and in its ongoing activities?” were some of the questions asked, according to lawyers. Further questions revolved around press statements and interviews, among other things.
