Three and a half months after the start of the invasion of guerrilla-held Medya Defense Zones in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq), the Turkish army has still not achieved its goal. Since 14 April 2022, the regions of Zap, Avaşîn and Metîna have been under attack with modern weapons technology from NATO and support from the collaborating ruling party, KDP. The Turkish state wanted to capture the guerrilla areas within a few weeks, but this plan has failed so far.
The Turkish occupation forces are in a difficult situation in the mountainous region of southern Kurdistan, which is difficult to access. The guerrillas are resisting with various tactics. In order to break down this resistance, the army is sending separately trained special units into the war zone, in addition to paramilitary village guard units and other counter forces, and is using different variants of chemical warfare agents on a daily basis. There are also reports from the mountains of the use of phosphorus bombs and special explosives with enormous impact power; the guerrillas suspect thermobaric weapons and tactical nuclear weapons. These methods have already claimed the lives of numerous guerrilla fighters.
Another method used by the Turkish army is to send trained dogs - equipped with cameras and explosives - into the tunnels built by the guerrillas. Footage has now emerged of a camera carried by a trained dog. The video testifies to the army's helplessness in the face of HPG (People’s Defense Forces) and YJA Star (Free Women’s Troops) resistance.
In the nine-minute video, Turkish soldiers can be seen attaching a camera, an LED lamp and other equipment to the dog. The dog is led to the entrance of a tunnel and its leash is taken off, but it does not want to enter the tunnel. He is mistreated and sent into the depths of the Hewrê Savaş tunnel in the Şehîd Şahîn resistance area. He is eventually killed in a battle in the tunnel, and the guerrillas are able to seize the camera.
Another shot from the same tunnel shows a scene after the fierce battle. The Turkish occupation forces have been repulsed, and the dog is dead.
