The guerrillas of the HPG (People’s Defense Forces) and YJA Star (Free Women’s Troops) continue their actions against the Turkish invading forces in the Medya Defense Zones in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq) without interruption. "Our forces combine modern guerrilla tactics and show the whole world with high sacrifice and under the most difficult conditions that they are the defenders of Kurdistan", the daily press centre of the HPG said in a current overview of the war in Kurdistan. According to the statement, ten soldiers were killed and two wounded in the latest guerrilla actions, an armoured vehicle and a Turkish position were destroyed.
HPG dedicated these actions to the legendary guerrilla commander Mahsum Korkmaz (Nom de Guerre "Egîd"), who fired the first shot of the PKK in Eruh district of Siirt on 15 August 1984, thus initiating the armed liberation struggle.
